It is important to keep the heat sinks & fans in your computer dust free so they can do their job and keep vital components cool to avoid early failure.
This should be done once a year in normal environments and more regularly for dusty environments or if you keep your PC on carpeted floor. If people smoke in the same room cleaning should be done every 6 months as the tar causes the dust and dirt to stick on the critical components more easily causing overheating and failure.
Cleaning can be done as part of an annual service which also includes checking your security software is up-to-date and functioning correctly, your windows updates are current and no critical errors are showing up in the windows event log.
